Avanzando - Let’s Move Forward Together, is one of the two pathways available to scholars in the Lift As You Climb Program. The latter is a holistic support program designed to empower college students through mentorship, academic support, a sense of belonging, and life readiness skills. While both subdivisions share the same core mission of fostering student success to increase retention and graduation rates of their students, they offer unique approaches to mentorship and growth. Avanzando emphasizes the power of collective progress, community connections, and shared success.

Together, these programs create a dynamic support system that allows students to find the guidance, resources, and community they need to thrive in college and beyond.

The H&R Block Foundation created the Henry W. Bloch Scholars Program (HWB) in honor of Henry Bloch's retirement. HWB Scholars are students in whom Henry could see himself: students who may not be considered for traditional scholarships due to past academic experience, but demonstrate the drive and determination to succeed. Since 2001, this unique scholarship program has provided funding toward the cost of full tuition and fees.

In 2019, our program was given opportunity to serve even more local students through an expansion of our current scholarship, and the implementation of a new scholarship: The Marion H. Bloch Scholars Program (MHB). MHB is a complement to HWB and is designed to attract, encourage and support higher performing students living in urban environments in greater Kansas City.

With the addition of MHB, the Bloch Scholars Program became an all-embracing program with a diverse pool of participants. Although UMKC Bloch Scholars differ in major, academic year, educational background, life experience and career goals, they all find commonality through being a Bloch Scholar.

This group is for all UMKC students that identify as First-Generation College Students. Being First-Generation means that the parent or guardian of the student has not completed a four-year college degree program within the United States. You DO NOT have to be a part of the First Gen Roo Scholars program to join this group, however we do work with the program to provide events and support to the first gen community on campus to the best of our abilities.

You will benefit from this group by being able to view all of the event available to and tailored for First-Generation students. You'll also be able to connect with other students that have similar experiences as First-Generation. Students in this group will also have the ability to connect and be exposed to the various different First-Generation student support groups on campus.

The First Semester Experience is a three-credit hour course in the UMKC Essentials curriculum. This course provides a common foundation for all incoming first-time college students at UMKC.
